Workshops run over a day and take place in Chichester and Fareham. I teach at The Maltings in Farnham once or twice a year, please contact me for future dates.

Workshop 1:  Introduction to Mount Cutting (Beginners / Improvers)

Learn to cut accurate, bespoke, single mounts using a handheld mount cutter. Great for beginners or those wanting to refresh their mount cutting skills.  Suitable for painters, crafters, photographers, calligraphers, textile artists, in fact anyone wanting to make pictures look their best.

  • Calculate sizes so you can fit your pictures into readymade or existing frames
  • Learn the correct techniques, materials and equipment
  • By the end of the morning you will have cut your first two mounts
  • Discover what the back of the frame should look like
  • Take home several mounted pictures ready to prop on the mantelpiece or drop in a frame
  • Illustrated handouts, tips and shortcuts

Workshop 2:  Float Mounting (Beginners / Improvers)

Master the art of displaying pictures as though they are ‘floating’ in the frame. You don’t need to be able to use a mount cutter for this course and it’s suitable for complete beginners.

  • Use float mounting to introduce depth and shadow into your pictures
  • Create deckle edges – great for float mounting
  • Calculate sizes so you can fit your pictures into readymade or existing frames
  • Learn the correct techniques, materials and equipment
  • Take home your pictures ready to prop on a shelf or drop into a box frame

Workshop 3:  Introduction for Mount Cutting for Textiles (Beginners / Improvers)

Learn to cut accurate, bespoke,single mounts using a handheld mount cutter.  We’ll calculate sizes so you can fit your textiles into readymade or existing frames.  In the afternoon we’ll go on to look at cutting box mounts which will introduce depth and shadow around your work.  Please bring several textiles  (nothing bigger than A3 please).  If you already have any frames you would like to use do bring them along. Please make sure frames have enough depth to display your work without touching the glass.

Workshop 4:  Displaying Textiles (Beginners / Improvers)

Take your textiles out of the drawer and learn to display them, without damage, in a frame.   You don’t use a mount cutter for this workshop and it’s suitable for complete beginners.

  • Learn various methods to support your work without damage
  • Explore suitable threads and support materials
  • Take into account standard size box frames
  • Introduce depth and shadow

What’s the price?

£75 for the day.  Maped mount cutters (60cm ruler with 45 and 90 degree cutters) are available, if you wish to buy one, at £65.

What’s included?

The price includes two sheets of conservation grade off-white mount board, illustrated handouts, use of all tools and equipment.   There’s plenty of homemade cake and drinks.

What should I bring?

Please bring a packed lunch and several pictures. Bring frames if you have them.  If you are attending the Displaying Textiles Workshop please bring matching threads and any fabric which you would like to use as a background or support.
