This one-day workshop is fun and friendly and perfect for anyone who has a little experience of making books or who has attended my Leather Journal Workshop for beginners. You’ll take home two leather journals which can be used as bullet journals, sketchbooks or just for plain doodling.
What’s covered in the workshop?
The workshop runs from 10.00 to 4.30. Start by refreshing (or learning) the long stitch technique on an A6 (passport size) book, closing it with a simple fastening. You will design a simple spine for this using straight stitches and maybe using more than one colour. After lunch you’ll make a larger (A5) journal where the threads cross the spine to make diagonals or diamonds. You’ll create a closure using buttons, studs, elastic or leather ties, or a combination of them all. You may decide on a simple binding with an ornate closure or vice versa – the choice is yours. There will be plenty of opportunity to let your creativity rip.
You’ll go home with two unique leather journals with wraparound covers. There will be a large choice of leather, most upcycled and some new.
You’ll learn the following skills during the workshop:
- Finding the grain of the paper
- Folding the paper to make sections using a bone folder
- Designing and making templates
- Using an awl to punch the paper
- Choosing leather (it will be precut)
- Using a Japanese Screw Punch to make holes in the leather
- Stitching across two or three sections to make a stunning pattern on the spine
- Sewing buttons on to leather, making ties and attaching studs
- Incorporating the features of the recycled leather into your design

“Yet another excellent course from a Platinum Craft Course provider. We do lots of courses and this one is one of the best. We have the journals we made in pride of place in our hall for all to see and couldn’t have done it without Lynne’s careful help. Lots of interesting discussion, really good cake and excellent notes to take away if you want to continue. Downside is that we have now started looking at any leather item in a new light, wondering how many covers we could get out of a leather coat in the charity shop for example!” Jeremy 2019.
